Feature Drop: The Omnifact Privacy Filter™

Published on November 6th, 2023

At Omnifact, we believe that you shouldn't have to choose between leveraging the power of cutting-edge AI and protecting your sensitive data. That's why we are excited to introduce the Omnifact Privacy Filter™, an advanced safety net that automatically detects and anonymizes sensitive information before it's processed by third-party AI models.

This feature is enabled by default across the entire Omnifact platform, providing a critical layer of protection against accidental data exposure and ensuring your organization can innovate with confidence and peace of mind.

Why Privacy Matters More Than Ever

Think about all the sensitive information that flows through your organization every day - customer details, internal documents, financial records. As AI becomes more integrated into our daily work, this data is increasingly at risk of exposure. It's not just about checking boxes for compliance anymore - it's about protecting the real people and relationships behind every piece of information we handle.

Most AI providers are US-based companies, which means your data may be transmitted to servers outside your jurisdiction. Additionally, some providers may retain your data for their own purposes, creating potential privacy and compliance challenges for organizations operating under strict regulatory frameworks like GDPR.

Without strong privacy safeguards, even the most advanced AI systems can inadvertently expose personal details, trade secrets, or regulated information. That's exactly why we built the Privacy Filter™ - to ensure you can harness the power of AI without compromising the trust your customers and employees place in you.

How It Works: Simple, Automatic, and Secure

The Privacy Filter™ works seamlessly in the background to protect your data:

  1. Finding Sensitive Information: When you send a message or upload a document, the Privacy Filter™ instantly scans the content for sensitive information like names, phone numbers, and addresses. This check happens securely within Omnifact's infrastructure before any data is sent to external AI models.

  2. Filtering the Sensitive Parts: The filter replaces any identified sensitive details with generic, unidentifiable labels. This anonymization preserves the meaning of your message for the AI model without exposing the private information.

  3. Safe AI Processing & Restoration: The AI model processes only the filtered version of your message. When it generates a response, the Privacy Filter™ automatically and seamlessly restores your original information. The final response you see is complete and coherent, as if no filtering ever happened.

This entire process is automatic, ensuring your data is protected by default without any extra effort on your part.

What Kind of Information Is Protected?

The Omnifact Privacy Filter™ is designed to identify a wide range of sensitive data categories, including:

  • Personal Identifiable Information (PII): Full names, email addresses, phone numbers (with specific recognition for US and German formats), physical addresses, and IP addresses.
  • Confidential Numbers: Passport numbers (US and German), driver's license numbers, social security numbers (SSN), and tax identification numbers.
  • Financial Data: Credit card numbers, International Bank Account Numbers (IBANs), Bank Identifier Codes (BICs), and bank routing numbers.
  • Organization Data: Company names, customer information, and other business-specific confidential data.

We are continuously updating the filter to recognize new types of sensitive information, ensuring your protection evolves with the landscape of data privacy.

Built from the Ground Up

At Omnifact, we didn't just implement an off-the-shelf solution – we built the Privacy Filter™ from scratch to meet the unique needs of businesses working with AI. Our approach combines two powerful methods:

  • Smart Pattern Recognition: For structured data like credit card numbers or bank account details, we use proven detection methods that can instantly identify these formats with high accuracy.
  • Intelligent Context Analysis: For information that depends on context – like recognizing when "John Smith" is a person's name versus a street name – we've developed our own AI model that understands the meaning behind the words.

This combination allows us to protect a wide range of sensitive information while maintaining the quality and usefulness of your AI conversations.

You Remain in Control

We believe that data privacy should be powerful but also flexible. While the Privacy Filter is on by default, organization administrators have the ability to configure it as needed.

Furthermore, there may be times when you need the AI model to have access to a specific piece of information to get a meaningful answer. Our Click to Reveal feature gives you granular control to do just that. If a piece of information has been masked, you can simply click on it to reveal it to the AI for that specific query, ensuring you can work effectively without compromising your overall security posture.

The new Omnifact Privacy Filter™ is more than just a feature; it's a core part of our commitment to building a trustworthy, secure, and powerful AI platform for businesses. We're excited for you to experience this new level of protection.
